Getting to COTA and getting out: the traffic playbook.
The short answer: COTA sits southeast of Austin with a handful of roads in and out, and 140,000+ fans use them all at once. Arrive 2–3 hours before you want to be seated, follow official traffic routing (not your app's "shortcut"), and plan your exit before you arrive — the post-race exodus is the worst part of the day.
The inbound plan
- Go early — earlier than feels reasonable. Gates open well before on-track action. Arriving mid-morning for an afternoon race means you park, walk in, eat, and explore instead of sprinting.
- Use the official routes. COTA publishes race-weekend traffic routing; follow it. Navigation apps will try to send you down local roads that are closed, coned off, or already jammed — this is the #1 arrival mistake.

- Friday and Saturday are the practice runs. Use the lighter days to learn your route, your gate, and your walking time from lot to seat. Sunday you execute.
The exodus: surviving the exit
Everyone leaves at the checkered flag. Everyone. Your options:
- Linger on purpose. Post-race concerts, fan zones, and podium celebrations keep tens of thousands at the track. Wait 60–90 minutes and the lots drain dramatically.
- Accept it and tailgate. Some fans plan the exit as part of the day — coolers back at the car, chairs out, let the traffic clear.
- Leave during the cooldown lap. Purists will judge you. Your drive home will be 40 minutes instead of 2 hours. Your call.
The concert is a traffic strategy, not just entertainment
COTA's post-race concerts are genuinely good — and they double as the smartest possible exit plan. Watch the show, let 100,000 people leave first, then walk to your car.

Flying in
Austin-Bergstrom (AUS) is about 15–20 minutes from COTA without traffic — but there is always traffic on race weekend. If you're renting a car, reserve early; if you're not, sort your ground transport before you land (see rideshare notes above). Flying in Thursday or Friday morning and out Monday is the sane pattern.
